All theory is conducted online with an in-person practical (at-sea) day. There will be weekly online meetings where new modules will be introduced along with quizzes and assignments. The theory is relatively self-paced. You will be given access to an online classroom where everything will be posted, including (narrated) presentations.
Courses are offered individually or in packages. Pricing packages are available for those who take 2 or more courses in conjunction. More detailed pricing information can be found here.
Certain courses do require prerequisites, including our Protected Species Observer (PSO) course and Marine Mammal Observer (MMO) Bridging Program. Please see the course pages for the required prerequisites for each.
Our other courses do not require prerequisites, however, experience, knowledge, or formal background in biology/ocean science is recommended.
The practical sessions during our West Coast courses take place within the Vancouver area, and our courses on the East Coast take place mostly within St. John’s, NL and occasionally in Halifax, NS.
The way you use your new credentials and where you want to work is entirely up to you! Some of our past students have sought work in renewables in the USA, work abroad in oil and gas and some have expanded into environmental management. Some have also used their new credentials to build capacity in their current jobs and expand their skill set.
