This course is required for all Protected Species Observers working within the Gulf of Mexico region. It is specific to marine mammal mitigation regulations within the Gulf of Mexico as certified and outlined by the BOEM (Bureau of Ocean Energy Management) and BSEE (Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement).

Learning Outcomes Include:

  • An overview of the Marine Mammal Protection Act and the Endangered Species Act as they relate to seismic acquisition and protection of marine mammals and sea turtles in the Gulf of Mexico

  • A brief overview of seismic acquisition operations in the Gulf of Mexico

  • Overview of seismic mitigation measures and the protected species observer program in the Gulf of Mexico

  • Discussion of the role and responsibilities of the protected species observer in the Gulf of Mexico, including: legal requirements, professional behavior, integrity, authority of protected species observer to call for shut-down of seismic acquisition operations, assigned duties and reporting of violations and coercion

  • Identification, cues and search methods of locating all Gulf Of Mexico marine mammals and sea turtles

  • Data collection and reporting requirements
